Mrs. Matis not only wore her patriotic attire for Constitution Day, she read the Preamble to the Constitution during morning announcements as teachers showed illustrations from We the Kids (illustrations by David Catrow).
Congratulations to our Sixth Grade "The Gift" essay winners! Each student had to write a creative/informational essay. This gift was each individual student's idea and could be anything that would make our world a better place to live. The winners received a super size Milky Way candy bar, because they are out of this world!
On Wednesday, September 7th, students at Maple Ridge Elementary were privileged to see two Harlem Globetrotters in action. Hollywood and PeeWee not only demonstrated their amazing abilities on the basketball floor, but took the time to talk about responsibility. Many students were brought up from the audience to learn a few skills. Teacher DeAnn Sanders was also recognized as the Teacher of the Year, and given a miniature Statue of Responsibility in her honor.
Master storyteller Bil Lepp stopped by Maple Ridge Elementary on Monday, August 30th, to share his masterfull storytelling with the students. Bil will be sharing stories at the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in Orem September 1-3.
A storyteller, author, and recording artist, Lepp’s works have received awards and recognition from The Parents’ Choice Foundation, The National Parenting Publications Assoc., and the Public Library Assoc. In 2011, Bil was awarded the National Storytelling Network’s Circle of Excellence Award. Lepp has been featured 15 times at the National Storytelling Festival, and performed at major storytelling festivals, at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, and at corporate events and functions across the country. He performed at Comedy Central’s Stage on Hudson in Los Angeles, CA.
Students at Maple Ridge enjoyed a fun assembly on the first day of school provided by IHC and the Just Jumping Company. After being entertained by amazing tricks and routines, a few students and teachers were able to practice their jumping skills. Mrs. Matis even got in on the fun by double dutching in her high heels. Last week, as teachers prepared for the coming school year, volunteers from Maple Mountain Pharmacy offered their services in laminating, cutting and organizing various supplies. Many teachers were appreciative of their willingness to help with the preparation.
On Wednesday, August 17th, teachers returned to school. As part of the welcome back, Principal Sara Matis donned her patriotic attire to inspire teachers to be persistent, and passionate about teaching. Several Olympic games were available for teachers to play during the lunch hour.
Yearly registration will be held for all students and their families on August 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This activity is critical in that it allows schools to get an accurate student enrollment.
