Recently, students at Maple Ridge were instructed on the importance of internet safety during a NetSmartz assembly. A representative with NetSmartz shared some fun videos, and talked to the students about how to remain safe while using the internet, while having fun at the same time.
Recently, DeAnn Sanders was award the Crystal Apple Award at Maple Ridge. Craig Harvey from the Horace Mann Agency awarded DeAnn Sanders the Crystal Apple Award. The Crystal Apple Award recognizes excellence in education by honoring those making a significant impact in the lives of children. DeAnn teaches fourth grade, and is known for her fun and innovative approach to teaching. In addition to her regular teaching responsibilities, DeAnn also puts a lot of time into her volunteer work in directing the school play.
Yesterday, Tatum Perry, Joseph Heaton, Lars Simpson, and Austin Willson (all fifth graders) participated in the Central Utah STEM Fair held at BYU. They each advanced through two previous science fairs (Maple Ridge & Nebo District) in order to participate at BYU. They all attended an awards ceremony at Mountain View HIgh School in Orem, where they received their awards where they received third place in their respective categories.
On Thursday, March 24th, sixth grade students competed in the state UUR (Utah Underwater Robotics) competition. Throughout the last several months, students have been learning to construct their vehicles, and learning about engineering in general. This challenge is based on a platform known as SeaPerch. UUR is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematica) outreach program that teaches students how to construct an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) from low cost components. Students are required to learn important STEM related concepts to complete their vehicle including electronics, buoyancy, propulsion, hydrostatic pressure, waterproofing, etc.
On Wednesday, March 16th, fifth grade students participated in the wax museum. Each student chose an influential person throughout US history to learn about, and then came dressed as that character. They also memorized a short monologue to share and visitors came through the classrooms.
